The Melbourne Cup horse race over two miles will be run today, it's generally known as The Race That Stops A Nation as basically the whole country shuts down to watch it.

i placed my Cup bet six weeks ago with our local bookmakers, Pete and Shaun.

I backed trainer Bart Cummings to win the Cup for the thirteenth time for $20.

now, here's the kicker:

Bart has three horse in the race this year. One of them is last years winner and current race favourite Viewed who is currently priced at $5.40 by BetFair.com.au, Roman Emporer is priced at $9.60 while Allez Wonder is sitting at $27.

if any of those three win The Cup, i win my bet.

:pprshark: @ 20:1 odds :pprshark:

aha, the benefits of placing a bet before the field is named and the barrier draw has been done.

C'MON BART!!

i should mention that there are 24 horses in the race and you don't get a start in The Cup unless you're a damn good horse to start with. the 3,200m distance is the telling point, there are very few two mile races held in the calender.

i'll post after the cup to let you know how i went.

Good luck~! A great deal of NZ stops for it as well, but I suspect the recession will discourage most company pools :(

bleagh, no good. Bart didn't win, some nag called Shocking did.

the $10 place bets i put on two glue factory candidates @ 200:1 and another straggler @ 100:1 didn't pay either.

on the plus side, mum walked away ~$30 up after backing half the field.
